The Journey of Flip Pick: Revolutionizing Guitar Playing

Three years ago, we took what was perhaps the biggest leap of faith—short of saying "I do" 24 years prior—and signed on to pursue a patent for a quirky idea.
It was going to be expensive.
It was going to take a long time.
And it was going to be hard.
At the time, we didn't realize how expensive, how long, or how hard it was actually going to be, but we knew enough to know it wouldn't be a walk in the park. Nonetheless, we believed in ourselves and we believed in what would eventually become Flip Pick.
The Birth of an Idea
It started in September of 2022. After bouncing back and forth between playing guitar and toying with his new 3D printer, Tim told Jamie about an idea he had. He'd just 3D printed a ring that held a teardrop-shaped pick, allowing you to move the pick out of the way to change playing styles. Her reaction? "That has to already exist." Tim didn't think it did, and certainly not in the way he envisioned executing it.
The very first Flip Pick prototypes
After several tweaks, we landed on the first workable prototype. Together, we began searching to see if there was anything like it on the market. There wasn't! So in December of 2022, we took the plunge and went all in on pursuing a patent.
That was the easy part. Soon, we obtained patent-pending status, and we thought our world had just opened up. Now, we could talk to manufacturers and make Flip Pick a reality!

The Learning Curve
The problem? We knew absolutely NOTHING about starting a business, launching a product, sales, marketing, or manufacturing. And no one in our circles did, either. At the time, Tim was a state trooper, and Jamie was the operations director for a national non-profit organization. Product development was not in either of our job descriptions. But what we lacked in knowledge, we made up for in grit, tenacity, and a willingness to learn.
In early 2023, we launched the Flip Pick system. We made everything in-house by 3D printing the rings and picks. We figured out how to print them in one piece, which saved significant assembly time. We visited music stores to offer our product, sent samples all across the country for feedback, and began taking pre-sales in preparation for mass production.

The Challenge of Manufacturing
It was very important to us that we make Flip Pick in the United States, and ideally close to home. Altruistically, we felt it was best to contribute to our economy by keeping as much of the production local as possible. If we were going to start a business, we wanted to do our part to encourage more production at home! And practically, we wanted partnerships and agility.
We searched and searched for manufacturers who could mass-produce our concept, but at every turn, we hit walls. The quotes for injection molds were way too high, or the price-per-part was astronomical. And that was on the rare occasions a manufacturer would even give us the time of day. We were a new company with a new concept, and very few potential partners were willing to take a chance on us.
And thank goodness! What we didn't realize at the time was that the difficulties we had finding a manufacturer actually bought us the time we needed to dig in and make the Flip Pick system the best version it could be.
Feedback and Iteration
While we were looking for manufacturing partners, we started getting feedback on our system. And it wasn't great. The ring was too rigid and uncomfortable, and it didn't fit most fingers. We were locked into a single thickness, shape, and pick size. So we took the opportunity to work behind the scenes and give our Flip Pick some significant upgrades.
Based on customer feedback and our own experience, we realized we needed to make a few significant changes:
The finger ring mechanism needed to be flexible, and ideally adjustable.
Since picks are consumables—meaning they break and wear down over time—players needed to be able to swap out picks without having to purchase an entirely new system.
There is no monolithic pick that everyone uses. Players have so many different preferences for thickness, material, and shape, so we needed to offer multiple options without requiring a new ring mechanism for every version.
After months of brainstorming, we solved all of those issues and began prototyping iterations of the Flip Pick system you know today. For months, we experimented with materials and shapes for both the ring mechanism and the picks. Every few days, Tim would bring a new version to Jamie to inspect, certain he'd cracked the code, only to have her say it wasn't ready. Until finally, we landed on the right design:

The Road to Production
We sent samples of our new design for more feedback, and we got the confirmation we needed. This version of the Flip Pick system was ready to go. But we still didn't have a way to mass-produce it. So the search for production partners continued while we tried to drum up excitement for our product.
More months went by until we finally found a partner we could work with to have our finger straps made. But we still had the picks to figure out. We'd been laser cutting our prototypes, but we didn't have a way to print on them. So the search began for a partner who could help us produce our picks while we waited for our first production finger strap samples.
After weeks of searching, we found a solution to our pick production problem right in our backyard. Well, maybe not exactly in our backyard, but just a 5-minute drive away!
Rapid Press of Tallahassee came through for us in a HUGE way. Not only were they able to print logos on our RAVEN picks, but they were able to cut them as well. And that meant we could produce more picks faster!

Shortly after the picks were sorted, our production strap samples arrived. Finally, we were able to push forward with Flip Pick 2.0!

The Joy of Creation
Starting a business from scratch, inventing a product, and introducing a new concept to market has been a joy and a challenge. Every day has been a roller coaster! But we keep pushing forward to make the Flip Pick system the very best it can be.
We're living our dream, and we're happy to share what we've learned to help you do the same. So whether you're a fan of our Flip Pick system or you're looking to invent your own product and start a new business, we welcome you to follow us on our journey. We'll share stories about how we got this far, and we'll be candid about mistakes we made along the way.
